Never use a knife or shart object to remove drippings from glass votive holders; it may scratch or weaken the glass; causing it to break or crack during the next use.
Do not burn candles in glass items not made especially for candles. Everyday glassware is not made to withstand the temperature changes that happen when burning candles.
If you add a few drops of water to the glass votive holder before inserting the candle, the holder will clean easier after the candle is gone. Don't add the water unless you're going to burn the candle immediately after. Over time, the wick will absorb the water and the candle won't burn properly.
Don't place your candles in direct sunlight or harsh indoor lighting. Candles may fade if they are left in bright light over a long period of time.
A calm, steady, teardrop-shaped flame means the candle-burning process is balanced. The wick is getting the right amount of wax.
Constant flickering and smoking occur when the flame is disturbed. Small amounts of carbon particles (soot) escapes from the flame and is visible as a wisp of smoke. Too much or too little air disturbs the flame and causes it to soot. Avoid this by burning your candles in a well-ventilated room; away from drafts, vents or strong air currents.
If the wick is too long, the flame will grow too long and flare. It's important to trim the wick to 1/4 inch before every use.
Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches and other debris that could catch fire from the flame.
If you group your candles together, always keep them at least three inches apart when burning. If they are too close, they can create their own draft and cause the candles to flare.
Never leave a burning candle unattended. Keep it in your sight.
Never burn a candle on or near anything that could catch fire.
Keep candles away from children and pets.
Use an appropriate candleholder and put it on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
Always read the manufacturer's label for safety and burning instructions.
If a candle smokes, flickers repeatedly, or the flame becomes too high, extinguish it, let it cool, trim the wick, and relight.
For safety, stop using a candle when it is within two inches of the holder or 1/2 inch of the container bottom.
Never move a lighted candle, or a votive or container candle when the wax is liquid.
Extinguish a pillar candle if the wax pool gets near the outer edge.
Use a candle snuffer to extinguish a candle. It's the safest way to keep hot wax from splattering.
Never use water to extinguish a candle. The water can cause the hot wax to splatter or the glass container to break.
During power outages, it is better to use flashlights and other battery-powered lights as a source of light. Never use candles to look for items in a closet during a power failure. Never use candles while fueling items such as lanterns or kerosene heaters.
Never use a candle as a night light.
